Art
Thomas began making serious collage art in the mid-80s. He was self-taught and inspired by artists like Joseph Cornell, the Surrealists and Dadaists, and his own brother, Ted Chapin, an architect and 3-D collage artist. Thomas used store-bought tissue and wrapping paper, found paper and paper objects, cut-outs from magazine, rubber stamps, crayon and paint. The eight collages shown here were created in 1997, the year of his illness, and appear in the posthumous 8-CD boxed set, ALIVE.
Video
Included are live and documentary clips. View “Thomas Chapin Trio at Newport Jazz Festival-1995” and “Music Man: Thomas Chapin” a 12-minute documentary film directed by Terri Castillo Chapin in 1990.
